Woman Dies After Paddy's Day Wreck

A 27-year-old woman who was the passenger in a car that crashed into a Carlsbad lagoon on St. Patrick's Day, has died.

Ocean Beach resident Amy Lopez died Friday morning at Tri-City Medical Center, where she has remained on a ventilator since Wednesday's early morning crash, the Medical Examiner's Office said Saturday.

Lopez was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and was the only passenger in a car driven by suspected drunk driver Alicia Biggs, 22, of San Diego, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Biggs' 1996 Toyota Tacoma veered off northbound Interstate 5 near Tamarack Avenue in a crash shortly after 2 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Newbury.

Lopez was found floating face down in the lagoon.  Carlsbad police pulled her to the shore and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Newbury said.

Biggs swam to shore, Newbury said, and described her injuries as moderate. Both women were taken to Tri-City Medical Center.

Biggs will be charged with felony drunken driving, Newbury said.  Police would not say if any new charges are pending since Lopez's death.
