Witnesses Sought in Death of Vista Man

Francisco Castro, 33, was in a coma for six months

A Vista man died following a disturbance outside of a convenience store and now investigators want to speak with several men caught on camera who may have witnessed the incident.

Francisco Castro, 33, died earlier this month from injuries he sustained months earlier in Vista.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating Castro's death as a homicide and offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Castro was with at least three other men outside a 7-Eleven on North Santa Fe Drive and West Los Angeles Drive on Wednesday, May 6 at approximately 4:35 p.m.

The men are not considered suspects but may have information that would help investigators solve what happened to Castro.

The group of men were standing in an area where people are known to gather.

Castro was wearing a black cowboy hat, a tan shirt and dark pants before he fell and hit the back of his head on the sidewalk, deputies said.

The head injury was so serious that Castro was hospitalized for more than six months. Family members say Castro also suffered bruises on nearly every inch of his body.

Family members told NBC 7 Castro was struck with a beer bottle but homicide investigators say they are not sure that was the case.

Deputies would like to speak with the witnesses "in hopes of learning how Mr. Castro sustained his injury, leading to his death."

The men were captured on video but the incident was not, deputies said.

Castro worked at a North County restaurant for 15 years. He is survived by his extensive family, including his 2-year-old son.
