Witnesses Help Police Arrest Man Who Crashed into Escondido Building

A man was arrested in Escondido Tuesday night after crashing into a structure, authorities said.

At about 10 p.m., the driver collided into an apartment building in the 500 block of North Date Street in Escondido, according to the Escondido Police Department.

After crashing into the building, the driver took off. Witnesses followed him and caught him. They held him under citizen's arrest until Escondido police arrived.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for his injuries, said Mike Bertrand, acting Battalion Chief for the Escondido Fire Department.

Engineers were called to the scene to place supports in the building. Two units in the apartment complex were rendered uninhabitable by the crash. 

In total, about 13 personnel responded to the incident. Other than the suspect, no one was injured in the collision.

Authorities could not say whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
