Gusting winds near the border drove smoke from a fire in Mexico towards Point Loma Sunday. The smoke was visible on the horizon as far north as Kearny Mesa.
Cal Fire said it had spoken to the Tijuana Fire Department and they advised that CONAFOR (Mexico’s Forest Service) is working a large vegetation fire south of Rosarito in an area known as “Real Del Mar”. They said that the fire may be a few hundred acres and that they should be able to handle without any assistance from CAL FIRE. CONAFOR brought in the military to assist.
Residents in the area were being evacuated, sources said.
There was no immediate danger of the fire spreading, said CAL Fire. They are keeping a close eye on the situation.
