Which Roads to Avoid During Summer Construction Projects

If you had a crystal ball to avoid freeway closures and hours of delays, would you use it?

No need for a crystal ball if you’re reading right now because the information is already here: Two major freeway closures are heading your way in the coming weeks.

Caltrans, Sandag and the CHP announced their “Steer Clear Summer 2013” campaign Tuesday to let drivers know about significant delays and closures to Interstate 15 and Interstate 805.

The first closure will be on the southbound I-15 between SR 56/Ted Williams Parkway and Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard/Poway Road from 7 p.m. Saturday, July 27 until 4 a.m. Monday, July 29th. Construction crews will be fixing drainage problems on the newly renovated interstate. The southbound I-15 express lanes will be open and free of charge to all drivers during the closure as a detour.

The second closure will likely be more painful for drivers because it involves all lanes and both sides of I-805 in the Southbay. I-805 will be shut down between SR-54 and SR-905 from 3 p.m. Sunday, August 18 until 5 a.m. Monday, August 19. The closure is part of what Caltrans calls a “super window” to allow construction crews to tear down the East Palomar Street Bridge over the interstate to make way for a direct access ramp to future express lanes.

Detour routes and other construction information can be found at KeepSanDiegoMoving.com or by calling the I-805 construction hotline at 888-941-5005 or the I-15 Express Lanes project information line at 858-668-3368.
