Where to Snatch a Great Holiday Deal

A last minute holiday for the holidays may be a pretty good deal.

It's a buyers market for travelers right now.  Websites like sandiegocruises.com claim to be offering cruises out of San Diego for 75% off.  Carnival is offering 5 day cruises to Mexico leaving from San Diego for less than $350 per person. The catch, it leaves in less than a week.

Popular travel websites like Orbitz and Expedia have seen traffic on their sites drop off between 15% and 25%.  Earlier this year, Orbitz announced plans to cut 10% of its workforce.

Travel Consultant Nancy Chappie says with hotels and airlines desperate to fill rooms and seats, if you don't find the deal you want, ask for a better one.

"Don't be afraid to ask, is breakfast included?  Can I have a third person in the room for no extra charge?  You know, ask for what you want because they're willing to wheel and deal," Chappie said.

Even if you can't drop everything and leave town for a few nights, the Convention and Visitor's bureau recommends a "staycation". A lot of the hotels and restaurants right here in San Diego are offering incentives like food credits or $100 off per night.

"Like every major destination, we are having our troubles, we are struggling.  There's a lot of uncertainty about what will happen in the New Year," Sal Giametta with the San Diego Convention and Visitor's bureau said.
