What's New at December Nights

Balboa Park is a playground for kids and grown-ups but during the holidays it's magical the way it transforms itself into a mystical wonderland.

"San Diego may not get snow, but we know how to celebrate the winter season and Balboa Park December Nights... is for many, the start of the holiday season," said Carolyn Wormser, Director of Special Events for the city of San Diego.

The two-day celebration starts Friday, Dec 3. It's the 33rd year of one of San Diego's favorite holiday event.

And there will be new features this year to keep the celebration fresh and fun.

If food is one of the highlights, then the gourmet food truck Chop-Sooey is a new adventure to try. It combines executive chef Deborah Scott's Asian fusion cuisine with barbecue .

You can't miss it -- Just look for the super giant samurai pig wielding a cleaver on the outside.

Major League Baseball pitcher Chris Young and his wife Liz will be hosting the first annual December Nights Winter Coat Drive.

San Diego's homeless will benefit from donated new and gently used coats brought to the San Diego Hall of Champions.

And also new, there's an app for helping you find what you want. And it's free. It's available at the iTunes Apple store.

The museums will be open free, from 5-9 p.m. on both nights.

And there's a lot more--

Del Cerro Baptist's famous Christmas Story Tree  at the Organ Pavilion
Artisans of Spanish Village
Music and Dance
Timken Museum's collection of priceless ornaments
Reuben H. Fleet's interactive "Earth Exposed"
The Prado at Balboa Park
and the Lights!

So get your holiday bells on. Balboa Park December Nights is kicking off the season big time.
