Nearly 70 homes in La Mesa were left without water after a main break caused a street to buckle and flooded an intersection of a residential neighborhood.
The Helix Water District (HWD) said a 6-inch concrete main installed decades ago broke near the top of the hill on Cornell Avenue.
A portion of asphalt could be seen buckling as water seeped out from underneath. Water and mud pooled at the bottom of the hill at Harbinson Avenue, prompting the city to advise commuters to avoid the area.
Near-freezing conditions may have contributed to the break, crews said.
Crews said 67 homes in the neighborhood were without water. They expected service to be restored at around 5 a.m. Wednesday after about 10 hours of work, which would include excavating the street, repairing the main, and performing quality tests.
"Our people at the site are shutting valves to control the flow of water and minimize the number of homes without water service," the HWD said.
In all, six feet of old cement pipe was replaced with plastic.

Fire department officials at the scene said they expected about half of the homes on the street to be without water service. HSD was unable to provide numbers on how many homes were impacted or how long potential water loss will last.
