State Water Deal Dead in the Water

Water deal was Assembly's most ambitious goal this session

California lawmakers fell short in their attempt to reach a deal to overhaul the state's water system, their most ambitious goal in the current legislative session.

The Assembly would not vote on a Democratic package of bills that included money for water storage, conservation and protection of the delta, according to Shannon Murphy, a spokeswoman for Assembly Speaker Karen Bass. A representative of Senate leader Darrell Steinberg confirmed that the Senate would not be voting on a water proposal Friday, the last day of the regular legislative session.

Democrats were unable to secure support from Republicans, who said the bills' language would make it difficult to fund new dams, a Republican priority.
