A majority of Chula Vista residents voted in favor of a half-cent sales tax increase to create revenue for police and fire staffing.
Under Measure A, Chula Vista will tie for the highest sales tax in the county, at 8.75 percent.
The Chula Vista Police Department and Chula Vista Fire Department failed to meet response time goals for several years in a row.
Chief Roxana Kennedy said she needs to hire more officers to meet the demand.
So the city put Measure A on the ballot, adding a half-cent sales tax to drum up funds for firefighters and police officers.
Fire Chief Jim Geering told NBC 7 he should be able to add 36 firefighters with that extra money.
Opponents wanted the city to be accountable for how they're spending current tax revenue.

Revenue from Measure A will go into a general fund and will be managed by an oversight committee put in place to make sure the money from Measure A is only used for police and fire staffing.
In 2016, voters approved Measure P, a ten-year, half-cent sales tax.
That money was earmarked for city infrastructure needs, like fire stations and equipment.
NBC 7 reported in January that hundreds of park sprinklers were replaced with help from Measure P revenue.
In March, a $15 million re-pavement project was underway with Measure P funds.
The San Diego County Regisrar of Voters will certify election results by July 5.
