Vista Schools Prepare for Possible Cuts

As the state Legislature mulls over potential midyear budget cuts, local school officials are bracing for the worst.

Though it's unclear what will ultimately come from the special legislative session now under way in Sacramento, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed budget cuts that could mean millions less in state funding for the Vista Unified School District.

"These are bleak times right now," Trustee Carol Herrera told the North County Times this week.

If proposed midyear cuts become a reality, Vista Unified could end up with $7.4 million less than it expected this school year.

In addition, a decline in enrollment and an in increase in costs could leave the district with as much as a $13.4 million shortfall next year, said Donna Caperton, the district's chief business officer.

"It's just a best guess," she said. "We don't know which way the Legislature is going to go."
