Visibly Shaken, Turner Learns Fate for Slaying Wife

A Ramona man convicted of voluntary manslaughter for strangling his wife and burying her body in their backyard has been sentenced to six years in state prison.

Keith Harold Turner was sentenced Friday in San Diego County Superior Court for killing Toby Turner in September 2005.

"I didn't agree with the manslaughter verdict anyway, but I think he should have got 11 [years].  It was actually murder to me, I think," said Toby Turner's former boyfriend.

His defense lawyer argued Turner had been pushed to the breaking point by an unfaithful wife who was addicted to methamphetamine and mentally unstable.

Turner's two daughters attended the sentencing hearing, and he turned to nod at them.

Five of the jurors who convicted him attended the sentencing hearing. Jurors Linda Brown and Tara Doughty said the jury felt Turner had been pushed to commit a crime and wanted him to only receive probation.

"He was a victim in this as well, after two years maybe more of what he's gone through, not to minimize a life was lost," Doughty said.  "I'm a little disappointed with the sentence.  Justice was definitely done.  It's not exactly what I was hoping for."

"This right here has been an eye opener for me.  I will never ever look at a newspaper or look at a TV and automatically judge someone," another juror said.
