Friends Identify Mother as Victim Fatally Injured in Mass Shooting Rampage

"It kills me that she was killed," said Drew Phillips, one of the victims of the shooting. "She just didn't deserve it."

A woman fatally injured in a mass shooting rampage in San Diego is being remembered as a kind and caring mother of three lost too soon.

Friends tell NBC 7 that the woman killed during a mass shooting rampage at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex was Monique Clark.

"It kills me that she was killed," said Drew Phillips, one of the victims of the shooting. "She just didn't deserve it."

Phillips said Clark was the first person to greet him on Sunday.

"She was the first person to greet me," he said. "'Where's my hug?'"

Willie Mayo, a friend of the victims, remembered Clark as a loving mother and friend.

"She has kids, a little one, maybe like five or six years old. So, very sad," Mayo. "Monique's a good person too, very nice. So, still trying to take it all in."

Six others were hospitalized with gunshot wounds while celebrating a friend's birthday in University City. Another person suffered a broken bone attempting to flee. An additional victim - a security guard - was shot at but not injured.

The gunman, identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, was described by witnesses as calm when he held a beer in his hand and opened fire in the upscale apartment complex, where people were attending a birthday party.

The gunman called his ex-girlfriend after the shooting began and wanted her to hear the rampage, San Diego's police chief said Monday.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Selis was despondent over a recent breakup with a girlfriend.
