Victim ID'd in Borrego Springs Homicide

George Mendenhall, 72, was at his second home

A central Oregon resident has been identified as the 72-year-old man who was fatally stabbed Wednesday morning in Borrego Springs.

George Mendenhall of Sunriver died after being attacked at his second home on the 2100 block of Borrego Hills Road at around 7 a.m.

Mendenhall was still conscious when police and paramedics arrived and was able to identify his attacker.

California investigators identified a handyman who worked for Mendenhall as a suspect, beginning a search that ended when 52-year-old Craig Petersen was shot and killed at a rest stop near Descanso by a San Diego County sheriff's sergeant.

Mendenhall and his wife, Kate, are longtime sponsors of the Sunriver Music Festival, and helped form the now-defunct Sunriver Preparatory School in the early 1980s, according to the Bulletin newspaper in Bend.
