Homicide investigators are calling the death of a local veterinarian a true whodunit. They're looking into whether a vendetta, road rage, or even suicide led to the death of Robert Stonebreaker.
Stonebreaker, 53, apparently walked away after he crashed a Porsche Saturday night around 9:30 on Paseo Delicias in Rancho Santa Fe, according to investigators. It appears that Stonebreaker may have lost control on a curve, then plunged down a 15-foot embankment.
Officials with the California Highway Patrol said that when they arrived, the driver was missing and that there was no blood apparent at the scene. Stonebreaker was found dead on Sunday morning in the driveway of a home less than half a mile from the crash.
San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos said Stonebreaker was likely killed at the scene where his body was found and that he died of blunt force trauma.
They even considered suicide, looking into whether Stonebreaker climbed up on a tree or wall and jumped off but the evidence doesn't support that theory.
Brugos is asking anyone with information about Stonebreaker's personal life that may have led to this homicide, to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
"Even though we're at the very early stages of it, we still don't know what happened," said Brugos.
"People may have bits of information out there that may seem to them to not be very important, they may in fact be very important," he said.
The vet -- who is survived by his wife, Pam and their two daughters, Kristen and Kelly -- owned the Animal and Bird Hospital of Del Mar and FreeFlight, a boarding facility for birds.
