Navy Wife Guilty of Second-Degree Murder

Jurors decided whether the brutal stabbing of Fred Trayers was a planned attack by an enraged wife

Jurors have returned with a verdict in the trial of the wife of a San Diego-based Navy doctor who stabbed her husband to death.

The jury has declared Jennifer Trayers guilty of second degree murder with a deadly weapon, but not guilty of first degree murder.

Trayers admitted she stabbed her husband Fred Trayers in the back of the head inside the couple's North Park condo in December 2010.

She told jurors she initially approached her husband with a knife intending to kill herself but was provoked into the attack by her husband. She testified she "blacked out" after the first stab.

Defense attorneys told jurors their client was guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

However, prosecutors charged Trayers with murder argued Jennifer waited for her husband, planned when she would attack him and then while he slept, stabbed him 11 times.

Trayers was obsessed over Fred's plans to leave her for his mistress, another Navy doctor who testified she had received an eight-page email from Jennifer Trayers.

The email talked about how much Jennifer Trayers loved her husband and how she was there for him for 19 years, even when she claims he had cheated on her with other women before.

Fred Trayers worked as an emergency room physician at Naval Medical Center San Diego at the time of his death.

If convicted, Trayers faces 26 years to life in prison.
