Valentine's Day Vote is Critical

The state Legislature is scheduled to vote Saturday on a critical budget package to tackle California's $42-billion shortfall.

Democrats in contested districts are under pressure not to cave on plans for some $14 billion in tax increases, $15 billion in cuts and $11 billion in borrowing.

Republicans also face pressure from conservative backers who oppose higher taxes.

Legislative leaders and Gov. Schwarzenegger have been locked in a battle for 100 days over how to solve the massive shortfall.

Republican and Democratic leaders tentatively agreed to a framework that would give businesses tax credits and relax some environmental rules in exchange for tax increases and borrowing.
