Truck Strikes Pedestrian in Chula Vista

A pedestrian was seriously injured Friday night after being struck by a pickup truck in Chula Vista, officials said.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. at Broadway and I Street. Police said the victim was allegedly jaywalking when the driver of a Ford F-350 hit him, sending the man to UCSD Medical Center with severe injuries.

Police said the pedestrian was not paying attention to traffic or the lights, and crossed right in front of the oncoming truck.

According to one witness at the scene, the pickup truck hit the man with such force, he was thrown approximately 20 feet in the air. The victim’s cell phone, keys, even his boots were thrown far from the site of the impact.

Witness Jose Vargus, 17, saw the whole thing from the sidewalk. He said he ran to help the victim, but there wasn’t much he could do.

Police officers questioned the driver at the scene, but investigators believe the driver was neither speeding nor impaired. Several witnesses told police the driver was not at fault. Officers said the driver will likely not be charged in the accident.

The victim’s name was not released. He suffered a broken arm and other injuries, but survived.
