Trial Set For Man Accused in Pregnant Teen's Death

A judge has ruled that Mark Allen Davidson will stand trial in the death of a pregnant Vista teenager, according to a published report.

Nancy Canseco, was killed when Davidson's 1968 Chevrolet Impala allegedly slammed into her in late October.  According to San Diego County Sheriff's deputies, the Impala was traveling northbound on N. Santa Fe at more than 80 mph at around 10 p.m. The driver lost control as the car crossed over Bobier. The car slid sideways and crashed into a fence.

The victim, a 19-year old woman who was seven-months pregnant, was hit and killed walking along the road. She was directly in front of her home at the time. Her mother returned from work while deputies were at the scene and identified the teenager.

Deputies say there where five people in the car at the time of the accident. The driver, Davidson, 21, was booked at the Vista Jail on a number of charges including two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter.

Davidson of Vista faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted on all charges, including one count of felony vehicular manslaughter and several reckless driving and child endangerment counts, according to the North County Times.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges during a November arraignment.

No charge was leveled in the death of the unborn girl, a fact that has angered Canseco's family and friends. California law does not allow such charges unless murder is alleged, the paper reported.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein said during Friday's preliminary hearing at the Vista courthouse that there was enough evidence to go forward with a trial. He added that the manslaughter charge involving Nancy Canseco is appropriate.
