Transit Guard Wounded in Slaying

Victim was 21-year-old from Oceanside

Two men were shot, one fatally, during a scuffle on Friday night near the Vista Transit Center, according to investigators with the sheriff’s department.

The shooting took place in the 100 block of Olive Avenue at about 8:40 p.m. When deputies arrived, a man was lying in the street and a security guard for the North County Transit District was sitting on a nearby curb.

The men were apparently arguing, detectives said. The situation escalated, ending “when the security guard fired two rounds from his handgun, striking the combative individual, as well as wounding himself,” sheriff’s deputies said in a statement. It's not clear if the guard accidentally shot himself or was injured in a fight for his weapon.

On Saturday afternoon, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office identified the dead man as Oceanside resident Anthony G. Wacker, 21.

The transit guard was hospitalized with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
