Toreros Let One Slip Away

USD basketball team loses late lead against Pepperdine

The Toreros needed one rebound to beat Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon. They had two chances to get that one rebound. It didn’t happen.

USD lost to the Waves 70-67 in a game they led by three points with 19 seconds remaining. Senior guard Olin Carter III knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Toreros a 67-64 lead. Then things just kept going wrong.

Isaiah Wright fouled Colbey Ross on a 3-point shot. Ross only made the first free throw … but his last miss was corralled by Jade’ Smith, who was fouled by Finn Sullivan. Smith missed the second free throw … but he rebounded his own miss and passed to Kessler Edwards who hit a short bank shot to put Pepperdine up 68-67.

USD had two seconds left, plenty long enough to get a shot off, but Tyler Williams turned it over and Ross made a pair of free throws with one second left.

The Toreros fall to 16-9 overall and 5-5 in the West Coast Conference. They have a busy week ahead of them. On Thursday USD hosts BYU and then welcomes 4th-ranked Gonzaga to Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday night.
