Top 3 Gubernatorial Candidates in San Diego Day Before Primary

Gavin Newsom, John Cox and Travis Allen were all in San Diego doing a last minute push for votes Monday

The latest poll numbers show Gavin Newsom, John Cox and Travis Allen as the front-runners in California’s gubernatorial election – and all three candidates were speaking to voters in San Diego Monday – one day before the primary.

The men have 33, 17 and 12 percent respectively heading into the last 24 hours. The candidates may have very different ideas for California, but one theme central to all three is making our state more affordable.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is our state. It's time we take it back!” Republican Travis Allen told a crowd of enthusiastic constituents outside City Hall Monday morning.

Allen, who aligns himself with President Trump, outlined his five-point plan for his supporters. “It starts out with cutting your taxes,” he told the crowd. He plans to do this by repealing the gas tax and defending the high-speed rail.

Immigration is also on his list. “In my very first 100 days in office, gone will be these open border policies and this flagrant violation of federal law,” he exclaimed.

While Allen’s policies are Trumpian, the president has endorsed another Republican in the race.

“I was very proud to get the endorsement,” John Cox, who was in San Diego to cast his vote, told NBC 7. “But I was number two back in March, before his endorsement. I think what it does is cemented the feeling of Republicans that I was the right candidate to tackle the problems of this state.”

Cox sees it as a two-man race at this point, between him and Newsom. Newsom agrees, calling Trump’s support of Cox a “game changer.”

“My biggest concern is apathy,” Newsom told NBC 7 after a rally at the UDW Home Care Union headquarters. My biggest concern is people assume one thing, and it doesn't manifest unless people convert their point of view to an actual vote. Meaning polls don't vote, people vote.”
