Today's Swine Flu Headlines

California's Department of Public Health has confirmed 29 cases of swine flu across the state, and continues to test 130 probable cases.

There have been no swine flu deaths in California.

The median age for the state's confirmed and probable cases is 18 years old, which means many of those who have been affected are among the state's 6.3 million school-aged children.

As a result, many schools are closed today as a precaution including three local schools - Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, Kearny High School in Linda Vista and the School of Creative and Performing Arts in Paradise Hills.

The SDSU Children's Center has been closed until May 18 after reports of 20 children and staff experiencing flu-like symptoms.

β€œAt this time, we are not aware of any confirmed cases of (swine) H1N1 flu with any of our children. However, on Thursday and Friday a higher-than normal percentage of children reported flu-like symptoms,” SDSU President Stephen L. Weber said.

Three Children's Center staff members reported similar symptoms.

If tests show no indication of swine flu, the Children's Center may reopen sooner than May 18, officials said

Visitation at all state prisons has been suspended because of a possible case of swine flu. An inmate who became sick at Centinela State Prison in Imperial County is being tested for the flu.

Prisons spokesman Luis Pitino says it's not known when regular visitations will resume. The prisoner at Centinela State and his cellmate are being kept isolated. Pitino says the symptoms they're experiencing are mild.

Mexico's Health Secretary Jose Cordova says most economic activity will resume Wednesday, ending a five-day closure of nonessential businesses to stop the spread of the new virus.

Mexico City Marcelo Ebrard says cafes, museums and libraries will reopen this week but that health officials need to finish inspecting schools before students can return to class.

Orange County has reported its first two confirmed cases of swine flu. The county's chief health officer Dr. Eric Handler says a 26-year-old man and an 18-year-old high school student, both from Irvine, had contracted the virus.

University High School in Irvine remains open because the students has stayed home since becoming sick. The state Public Health Department has not yet confirmed any Orange County cases, but is investigating nine probable cases, including the two Irvine men.

As of Monday, May 4, the World Health Organization reports 25 confirmed deaths in Mexico and one confirmed in U.S., a toddler from Mexico who died in Texas.
