Tierrasanta Woman's Death Suspicious: Cops

When the elderly woman was found dead inside the home on Gabacho Drive, family members called police

Daisy May Hayes, 74, was found dead inside her Tierrasanta home Wednesday, the victim of a single gunshot wound to the head according to investigators.

Hayes and her husband Elmer have lived at the home on Gabacho Drive since it was built neighbors said.

On Wednesday around 6 p.m. family members went to check Daisy Hayes after not being able to reach her by telephone.

Family members called San Diego police who determined the nature of Hayes' injuries was suspicious.

Rick Simon lives on Gabacho Drive and said he has known the residents of the home for almost 40 years. Elmer and Daisy Hayes have three daughters according to Simon.

He said he was shocked when officers told him there had been a homicide inside that home.

"When they pointed to that house, we just about fell over," he said.

A San Diego police homicide lieutenant confirmed Elmer Hayes was in the hospital for a pre-arranged visit.

Neighbors say the husband recently had back surgery.

One person living on the street said he spotted a parked car in front of the Hayes home over the last several days. The neighbor said he spoke to the car owner who said he was having car or engine trouble with the vehicle.

Homicide investigators said they have no suspects and are waiting for the official report from the medical examiner.
