Ships, Sailors Moving to San Diego

Two Navy units are being merged, bringing 2,500 more sailors and their families to the city, according to a published report.

The merger, a union of anti-mine and anti-submarine divisions, will also bring eight ships and the Mine Warfare Command’s headquarters to Point Loma Naval Base, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The transfer will begin in May and continue until late this year, Capt. Paul Marconi told the paper.

Marconi also said that the Navy is spending $33 million to implement the change, renovating and constructing new buildings to accommodate for training and equipment requirements. Sailors can look forward to 19,000 square feet of classroom and office space as well as a 45-foot-by-90-foot pool for training.

New housing and headquarters will also be built, according to the Union-Tribune.
