Thousands May Be Owed Back Wages and Overtime

Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. is being sued in San Diego for allegedly not paying financial representatives wages even though they were treated like employees.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in San Diego, plaintiffs say they were required to work 50 or 60 hours a week and report to an office but were labeled as independent contractors and paid only commission.

Plaintiffs' attorney Steven Wittels says there are likely thousands of people who are owed back wages and overtime. Plaintiffs are seeking class-action status and suing for at least $100 million in California and $100 million nationwide.

Company spokeswoman Jean Towell says the allegations lack merit because the representatives are not employees.
