Thousands Lost Power Christmas Night

A eucalyptus tree fell Christmas night, taking power lines with it and leaving thousands of people without electricity, according to a published report.

The outage started just before 6 p.m. and initially affected about 5,000 residents in Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain, San Diego Gas & Electric spokesman Raul Gordillo told the North County Times.

By 8 p.m., that number had dropped to about 2,500 people, he said.

Gordillo said he couldn't estimate when those residents would have electricity again but that the company hoped power would be restored by Friday morning.
