This Is a Story About … β€˜About San Diego'

A popular television program documenting the history of our community is looking for a new home.

In an e-mail to staff Friday, NBC 7/39 announced it will end its association with Ken Kramer's "About San Diego" programs.

"Due to very difficult economic realities, NBC 7/39 has made the painful decision to end our broadcasts of Ken Kramer’s 'About San Diego' programs," Greg Dawson, vice president of news, said in the memo.

"I do not need to tell anyone in this building, or the community at large, how much 'About San Diego' has meant to NBC 7/39, and to viewers throughout this county, since it debuted as a news segment in 1995. It has received fine ratings and won a spot in all of our hearts," he said.

Beginning in 1985, "About San Diego" first appeared on commercial radio. It aired in morning and afternoon "drive time" on KSDO-AM.

For 14 years, it was heard every day by thousands of listeners and became a well-known and familiar feature. Teachers used the segments in classrooms. "About San Diego" won much recognition, including the "Golden Mike," several San Diego Press Club awards, Sigma Delta Chi awards from San Diego's professional journalism society, as well as honors from the California Council of History and the San Diego Teachers Association.

In 1995, "About San Diego" moved to NBC 7/39. Broadcast each Friday night on the "News at 11," the segment was often repeated the following day on "NBC 7/39 News This Weekend." It then moved to a full half-hour show running at various times on weekends and Monday morning.

But most of all, "About San Diego" won the reputation for making the listener feel good about the city we call home. It was storytelling that invariably left you saying, "I didn't know that!"

Kramer has decided to market the program independently. So you may soon be hearing his voice telling you another story "About San Diego."
