They're At It Again

The Jacobs School of Engineering performed an earthquake drill on a full-sized single-story structure at their "shake-table" facility at the UC San Diego Englekirk Structural Engineering Center on Monday.

The concrete masonry structure took on simulated earthquakes far more powerful than the devastating North Ridge shake back in 1994 which measured a 6.7 magnitude.

This test will provide researchers with critical structure data to help in future building construction and design, along with analyzing the effects on current structures.

The tests are a follow-up to tests on a wood-frame structure conducted by the same group of researchers in January.

The $950,000 project, funded by the National Science Foundation and various masonry industry groups, is a collaboration between the University of Texas at Austin, UC San Diego, Washington State University and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
