They Stole Candy From Babies

'What they couldn't steal they broke,' Little League president said

Over the weekend, someone broke into a snack shack at Oceanside's John Landes Park and stole all the drinks and candy belonging to the Vista American Little League, league officials said Wednesday.

Less than a month earlier, on the Fourth of July, the league that serves about 200 youths from Vista and Oceanside lost $5,000 in equipment when fire consumed the contents of a storage container at the Tri-City area park, reported the North County Times.

League President John Aguilera said the vandalism and property losses at John Landes Park have been frustrating. The Vista resident said he also has been frustrated with what he said were slow or incomplete responses by Oceanside's Police and Fire departments.

"I do understand that these are not maybe major crimes to Oceanside, but they are to us," Aguilera said.

On Saturday, Aguilera said he called police on their nonemergency line about 2:30 p.m. after discovering the concession stand break-in, noting the likely young culprits were nearby, guzzling ill-gotten Gatorade and eating Red Vines. Aguilera, his 9-year-old son in tow, said he chose not to confront the suspects.
