Teen Pleads Guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter

A Temecula teen who shot and killed his brother-in-law at an Oceanside apartment in 2009 pled guilty on Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter.

Cesar Magdaleno shot and killed Hector Nava on October 19, 2009, while he was 17-years-old and still just a junior in high school.

During a previous hearing, Magdaleno's sister, Luz Nava, testified that she had told her brother she was having problems with her husband, the North County Times reported. Oceanside police learned that the Friday prior to the shooting, Nava had told his wife he planned to leave her, the paper said.

Apparently, the woman that he was leaving his wife for had beaten up his wife during a previous incident, the NCT said. Nava reportedly told his wife he was behind the attack.

The night of the shooting, the paper says Luz testified she was out alone on the front steps of her home and decided to walk to the mail box when the shooting occured. Luz said when she returned her husband was outside the apartment clutching his chest, the NCT said.

Magdaleno, now 19, was charged as an adult. He will be sentenced to 16 years in prison at a May hearing.
