Teen Killed After Anti-Gang Speech

Web site launched to find suspect in teen's fatal stabbing

The night after giving a speech championing education as an alternative to gang live, a teenager is stabbed to death in North County, according to a published report.

Three months ago, 17-year-old Julian Rodriguez championed education as an alternative to gangs at a conference for high school students at Cal State San Marcos, the North County Times reported. Soon afterward, Julian was fatally stabbed at a party in Escondido. His death is the city's only homicide of 2009.

His killer has not been identified, leaving family and friends to hope a new Web site will generate leads on the case.

"It was just devastating," said Arcela Nunez-Alvarez, director of the National Latino Research Center at Cal State San Marcos and faculty adviser for the MEChA High School Conference held Feb. 20 at the university. "It was so ironic, this turn of events for this kid who had just made such a moving presentation."
