Man Missing in Mission Bay

Lifeguards began search in water and on land Monday night after person reported missing

A young man was reported missing near Mission Bay Monday night, triggering an extensive search of the bay and land around it.

Lifeguards said the 24-year-old was last seen around 8 p.m. on the railing mid-span in the 1300 block of W. Mission Bay Drive.

The person who called 911 to report the man missing told emergency dispatchers that they were riding in a car with him when he suddenly told them to stop at the top of the bridge.

The person said he jumped straight into Mission Bay off the Ventura Bridge, according to an official with the San Diego Lifeguards.

The bridge is about 45 feet above the water. Lifeguards say the man had been drinking and was possibly upset because of a girlfriend. That's why they think it could be a suicide, but is still being handled as a missing persons case.

Lifeguards and the San Diego Police Department were searching the water and land for the missing man. A dive team also searched underwater for the man, but the water was very murky, and visibility was limited.

By about 10 p.m., the search was called off, but was scheduled to commence again in the morning.
