Man Severely Burned in Suicide Attempt

A Lakeside man suffered second- and third-degree burns to 70 percent of his body Tuesday morning after igniting gas vapors in his home during a suicide attempt, San Diego County sheriff's deputies said.

The man, who has not been identified, caused an explosion reported at 7:20 a.m. in the 12000 block of Lakeside Court, said Sgt. Everard Dayrit. Neighbors also reportedly observed flames coming from a modular home on the property.

Deputies arrived to find the man with burn injuries to his face and upper body. Firefighters quickly doused the flames to save most of the property.

He was transported by ambulance to UCSD Hospital. His conditional was not released.

Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit detectives determined the explosion was caused by a suicide attempt.

There were no other injuries or occupants, Dayrit said.
