Suspicious Device Reported in Airport Parking Lot

Harbor and city police responded to report Wednesday afternoon

Authorities responded to a report that a suspicious device was in the San Diego airport's parking lot just after noon on Wednesday.

The Metro Arson Strike Team assisted city and harbor police in the parking lot on 3302 Pacific Highway, according to officials with the Harbor Police Department.

The suspicious item was left on the driver's seat if a pickup truck owned by Ace Parking. The truck was parked at the entrance to the San Park Pacific Highway parking lot.

A San Park employee reportedly witnessed someone placing a plastic bag on the driver's seat of the unlocked truck. The employee later examined the bag and observed what he thought were "wires protruding from a cylindrically-shaped object."

Using a robot to dismantle the package, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's bomb squad determined that the device was a 22-caliber magazine clip with ammo in it.

Two hours later, the area was rendered safe and the lot was re-opened.

The lot is part of airport property, but is not connected to the runway, officials said.

An investigation is underway to determine why the package was left in the truck to begin with.
