Suspects Try to Carjack SDPD Officer

The attempt fizzled once the suspects realized who was behind the wheel

San Diego police are looking for the suspects who attempted to carjack an undercover San Diego police officer.

Police say the officer was on patrol in an unmarked car in City Heights around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when two suspects approached him at a stop sign, threatened him with a gun and demanded his vehicle.

"The detective very alertly draws his own service weapon points the service weapon at the suspect and says ‘San Diego police back away from my car,’” said SDPD spokesperson Lt. David Rohowits.

The unidentified officer, who is part of the department’s gang unit, ran after one suspect who ran from the scene of the incident at 48th Street and Polk.

He followed the suspect to an apartment complex down the street.

Officers searched the building but the suspect got away Rohowits said.
