Suspected Bank Robber Barricades Himself in Home

Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside a home after robbing a bank

A man allegedly involved in a bank robbery barricaded himself inside a home on the 8700 block of Blue Lake Drive in San Diego Friday afternoon.

El Cajon police said the suspect allegedly robbed a nearby US Bank inside the Vons grocery store at 2800 Fletcher Parkway earlier on Friday.

He handed the teller a demand note, according to police.

The suspect fled Vons in a getaway car and a witness was able to write down the license plate number. Later, a La Mesa detective spotted the vehicle parked at the home on Blue Lake Drive, leading investigators to the suspect.

Police said they set up a perimeter around the home. S.W.A.T. arrived at the scene to assist.

Neighbors in at least five surrounding homes were evacuated from the area as a safety precaution.

Eventually, three people who were inside came out voluntarily. Another person was ordered out by police. Their involvement in the bank robbery remains unknown at this time.

Around 10:55 p.m. -- many hours after the standoff began -- police were able to access the suspect and take him into custody. Authorities negotiated with the suspect through the door of the home.
