Surfers Stoked for Big Waves

Sets could reach 7 feet

Southern California is in for some big surf, according to forecasters.

Northward-advancing swells are expected to produce a rise in surf along south-facing shores Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. The swell should peak Friday with some sets to seven feet, and persist through the weekend.

Locally, the best surf is expected mostly in North County, anywhere North of Cardiff-by-the-Sea.     That's good news for the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, but forecasters said the potential for rip currents will be high and people should be cautious when entering the ocean.

The building swell and a high tide may also combine to create localized flooding on some shorelines.
