Suja Juice Inc. Raises Over $21 Million

Suja Juice Inc., a San Diego-based company that makes bottled raw juices, has raised over $21 million from the sale of equity and debt, according to a recent regulatory filing.

Suja’s product is organic, cold-pressed juice from non-genetically modified organisms — health-centric buzzwords that have helped fuel revenue.

“This space we’re in — the natural, cold-pressed organic juices — it’s the hottest beverage market on the planet right now,” Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer James Brennan told the San Diego Business Journal in May. “There’s huge buzz. You can’t pick up a People magazine or Us Weekly without seeing a celebrity doing a cleanse.”

San Diego company Suja Juice is the sponsor of this year’s Rock and Roll Marathon, so Co-Founder Annie Lawless and Jessie Sebor, the editor-in-chief of “Women’s Running” magazine, joined the NBC 7 morning show with some training and nutrition advice on how to prepare for a big run.

Suja made its debut in Whole Foods stores in September 2012, and brought in revenues of nearly $18 million in its first full calendar year. Chief Operating Officer Kurt Cahill told Food Navigator USA that the company is on course to generate revenues “north of $40 million” for the 2014 calendar year.

Suja could not be reached for comment regarding plans for the new infusion of funds.
