Crying Baby Alerts Family to Fire

The owner of a home in South Park is crediting his three-month-old baby with saving his family when their house caught on fire Sunday night.

He said his wife got up early in the morning to check on the crying baby when she heard a sound coming from the attic. The owner soon realized it was the sound of crackling fire.

The home, which the owner has been renovating for five years,  has approximately $300,000 worth of damage according to fire officials.

San Diego Fire Rescue officials say the fire started jsut before 3 a.m. Monday in a third floor bedroom and in the attic areas of the home on Grove Street between Ash and Beech streets.

Windows on the third floor of the house were open when the fire broke out, blowing the wind straight through and feeding that fire, officials said.

Firefighters were able to cover the surrounding homes to make sure embers didn’t start any other fires.

The fire was fueled by strong overnight winds.

"All I can say is the only reason this whole block didn't go is becasue that house and that house are one story," neighbor Anrew Lucas told NBC7.

Surrounding homes were evacuated temporarily but crews were able to contain the fire.

Smoke damage was reported in the first and second floors. No one was injured.

Investigators will try and determine what caused the fire.
