Snow Day for San Diego's East County

Julian and the Mountain Empire districts have canceled classes

Schools in Julian and the Mountain Empire districts have canceled classes and many in San Diego are likely considering a "snow day" of their own.

While residents west of the mountains will see a mostly sunny day, the storm system will still bring a mix of rain and snow above the 3,000-foot level Thursday.

Snow plows were busy all night in Julian, keeping the roads clear for residents and visitors.

The rain and snow that fell overnight will likely taper Thursday morning but drivers considering heading to the snow in the East County should be cautious driving through the mountain passes. Conditions are expected to be slick and dangerous.

Paul Norton of Mira Mesa has been craving wintry weather since the holidays.

“We actually went to Boston around Christmas time and there was no snow,” he said.

So after several inches of snow fell on Mount Laguna earlier this week, Norton decided to head up to see it, touch it and of course, play in it.

In Julian, business owners are just as excited for the recent change in weather.

For Mike Bannach of Mountain Spirits Liquor the storm has been very welcome.

“The next day is going to be packed and our merchants are going to be very happy,” Bannach said Wednesday night. “That is what this town thrives on.”

There was steady snowfall overnight in Julian. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until around 1 p.m. Thursday. If you're interested in going up to the snow, you may want to wait until later this afternoon.

“I recommend everyone come out here and enjoy the snow. It's something different you do not get in San Diego,” said Priscilla Tamayo of Spring Valley.
