A 15-year-old skateboarder who was found dead in the street last week may have been struck by several cars before he was found, investigators told NBC 7.
The San Diego Police Department said its investigators have not made an arrest because the victim, Jonathan Cortez, may have been hit by multiple drivers.
On Monday, the owner of a green minivan turned himself in to police but was not arrested.
Police say they aren't sure exactly who hit Cortez.
Cortez, 15, died just two days before he was to celebrate his birthday. Investigators have said they believe the teenager was struck by a Dodge Caravan Friday, Oct. 9 near 3600 54th Street. Witnesses reported seeing him skateboarding on the street before being hit.
The driver did not stop at the scene, officers said.
A green minivan with damage over the front driver’s side wheel was towed three days later from a parking place in an apartment complex on 50th Street approximately six miles away.
The license plate matched the suspect vehicle.
However, it’s unclear whether the teen had been hit before being struck by the Caravan, police said.

NBC 7 has learned the case has not yet been turned over to the District Attorney's office because the SDPD crime lab is backlogged with other cases.
