A person was struck by several vehicles on Interstate 15 in San Diego's North County Friday prompting officials to close the highway to clean the lanes.
California Highway Patrol officers learned there was a pedestrian killed on northbound I-15 near W. Bernardo Drive.
“Unfortunately that person was struck several times,” said Officer Jake Sanchez, Public Information Officer for CHP. “The freeway lanes have been shut down since about 4:45 this morning.”
The injuries suffered by the pedestrian prompted the highway to be closed and cleaned.
“Right now we believe it’s a male in his 40s but there is no identity at this point,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez said there were no reports of disabled vehicles or traffic collisions prior to the incident so investigators are not sure why the pedestrian was walking along this section of highway.
Traffic moved at a crawl through the area for nearly two hours before Caltrans opened HOV lanes to all traffic. Prior, traffic was being diverted onto Pomerado Road.
NBC 7's Ashley Matthews also suggested drivers use state Route 56 to Camino Del Sur to Del Dios Highway.
