Sheriff's Union Endorses Fletcher for Mayor

Public safety groups mixed on support for Fletcher and Dumanis

On Thursday, the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County threw its support behind Independent mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher.

The union said it is especially impressed with his work on Chelsea's Law.

The San Diego Police Officers Association has also endorsed Fletcher for San Diego Mayor.

Here's a look at all the candidates running for mayor this year.

However not all members of the public safety community have thrown their support behind the assemblyman. His opponent, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has the support of some prominent San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore and former San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender. The San Diego Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Association also endorsed Dumanis.

The issue of public safety has been a cornerstone throughout the mayor's race, as staffing ratios for the city's police and fire departments dwindle.

Four of the race's candidates discussed the issue in a recent NBC 7 San Diego debate. Click here to watch it.
