Sewage Spilled in San Elijo Lagoon

Thousands of gallons contaminate water in San Elijo and Cardiff

Signs are posted at San Elijo Lagoon and Cardiff State Beach, this morning, warning of a sewage spill.

About 250,000 gallons of sewage spilled along the 1300 block of South Hale Ave. in Escondido.

An electrical failure at the sewage treatment plant caused the spill, which started around 5:20 p.m. Sunday. Escondido staff were able to stop the spill about 15 minutes after it started, but none of the spill remnants were contained.

The spill flowed into the Escondido Creek, which drains into the San Elijo Lagoon. Signs warning people of the contamination were posted around the area, as well as at Cardiff State Beach.

The signs will remain in place until water authorities determine that the water is safe to swim in.
