Sewage Leaks Into Ocean in Del Mar, Causes Beach Closures

Del Mar lifeguards are telling people to stay out of the water after 4,200 gallons of sewage leaked into the ocean Sunday morning.

Beaches between 7th and 9th Streets are expected to remain close through Wednesday.

A clog in the pipes caused sewage to pour out of a manhole, local crews told NBC 7.

Due to the size of the spill, the City of Encinitas came out to help stop and vacuum up the sewage around noon.

The Del Mar Fire Department assisted.

It took crews roughly five hours to complete the cleanup.

The leak happened around 8th Street.

Many surfers who spoke with NBC 7 weren't aware of the contamination.

The City of Del Mar will continue to sample the ocean water until they are confident it is safe for recreational use again.
