Seniors Hitch A Free Ride

Elderly residents get "ride scholarships"

A new program is offering free rides to those who need them most.  The program which is sponsored by ITN San Diego and La Maestra Community Health centers will provide transportation services to poor, ailing seniors in the City Heights area.

According to officials, bus routes in the area have been dastically reduced as a result of statewide budget cuts, directly affecting low-income seniors who rely on the system to get to their weekly appointments.

"Many seniors as we know, struggle everyday to find means, ways of meeting their transportation needs. It puts alot of stress and uncertainty on people. And when they know there is something out there that is going to work for them, it makes all the difference," said  U.S. Rep. Susan Davis.

More than 75 elderly men and women will recieve 'road scholarships' from the program.
