Fatal Poway Crash Actually Happened Days Ago: SDSO

At the time, the driver side door was open, deputies said.

A car found crashed off an embankment in Poway, leaning on two large trees, likely happened days ago, San Diego County Sheriff's deputies (SDSO) concluded.

The car was first found near Poway Road and Mina de Oro Road at approximately 4:36 p.m., officials said.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found the car, a 1997 blue GEO Metro, leaning into two large trees.

Authorities walked further down the embankment to look for victims and found an ejected, deceased adult woman, who has not been identified, near the car.

At the time, the driver side door was open, deputies said.

The crash was reported by a passerby who saw the vehicle in the below embankment, according to SDSO.

Investigators determined the woman had been traveling westbound on Poway Road at the time of the crash when she went over the embankment for an unknown reason.

The Poway Fire Department and County Medical Examiner's office responded to the scene. The woman will be identified by the ME's office in the coming days.

The investigation is underway. A portion of the nearby road was closed as officials worked.
