School Budget Woes = More Cuts

It's official. More than 400 Poway Unified staff including teachers and counselors will be handed pink slips this week.

The decision was made Monday night at a school board meeting at Morning Creek Elementary in Sabre Springs.

At a candlelight vigil held by teachers and parents before the meeting, Betsy Pon, a Kindergarten teacher said, “I am on the cusp. I might lose my job. My husband might lose his job.  We are both teachers here in the district.”

Under California law, teachers, counselors and other school employees must be notified by March 15 if there is a chance they could lose their jobs.

In a unanimous decision, the school board votes to move forward with the notices.

About 400 school employees will be given potential layoff notices. At least 260 of those will be teachers.
The Board voiced their frustration with legislators in Sacramento.

Its a matter of re-educating every one of these yahoos idiots that don’t get it," said board member Penny Ranftle.

Some of the notices could be rescinded. Still, it's inevitable some will be out of work.

The only possible way to solve the problem and close the budget gap is by cutting people, positions,” said board member Jeff Mangum.

The bad news will be hand-delivered Tuesday through Friday.  The school board says the number of notices is high because they are preparing for the worst possible scenario.
