Sewage Spill Closes Santa Clara Cove

Approximately 300 gallons of sewage spilled into Mission Bay's Santa Clara Cove Sunday.

San Diego lifeguards could see the sewage flowing into the water and immediately closed the cove.

A blockage in a nearby sewer line was reported at 10:55 a.m.

San Diego Fire-Rescue tried to create a barrier to control what they could of the spill.

The City Wastewater Department was notified at 12:56 p.m.

San Diego County Department of Environmental Health (DEH) officials will also determine the cause of the spill.

Five samples were taken Monday around Santa Clara Cove. The testing will be done Tuesday as well. Pending test results, the closure could be lifted as early as Wednesday.

Water closure signs will remain in place until the area is safe for recreational use.
